For the second year in a row, members of the Irondale Police Department will be allowed to grow beards for three months as a charity fund raiser. This year's "Badges and Beards" will benefit Irondale's own Mitchell's Place.
Male officers who contribute at least $100 to the cause will be permitted to grow facial hair (normally against regulations) from now until the end of the year. Female members of the department who elect to participate can wear Mitchell's Place t-shirts and hats to work.

At the request of Shades Valley High School principal, Mary Beth Blankenship, the City of Irondale is funding a "Fire Science Academy," and providing instruction for Shades Valley students interested in becoming a firefighter. The class is taught by veteran Irondale firefighter and paramedic, David Brasher. Students who complete the program become certified volunteer firefighters at age 18, and can then take a five-week course in the Alabama Fire College to become a full-fledged firefighter.
You can watch a full video report here on WBRC Fox6 about the program.
